Ongoing Rift: Angel Reese Calls Out Robert Griffin III for “Lies” Amid Renewed Drama
The uneasy tension between WNBA rising star Angel Reese and former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III doesn’t appear to be easing anytime soon — if anything, it seems to be intensifying.
For those unfamiliar with how this public spat began, it traces back to May when Griffin, a former Heisman Trophy winner and then ESPN analyst, made waves by saying that Reese “hates” fellow WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark. His comment followed a heated on-court encounter between Reese and Clark, two of the league’s most talked-about young players whose rivalry has become a centerpiece of WNBA headlines this season.
Fast forward to this week, Griffin reignited the controversy in a surprising way. While attempting to defend Reese against a racist photo edit he stumbled upon online, Griffin circled back to his original claim, doubling down and insisting he had inside information to support it.
“I never attacked her or her family when I stated and backed up with clear basketball evidence that Angel Reese hates Caitlin Clark,” Griffin posted on social media. “It’s sports. Everybody won’t like each other. People in Angel’s inner circle called me and told me I was right and that Angel Reese has grown to hate Caitlin Clark because the media always asking her about Caitlin and being constantly compared to her.”
Rather than accept the explanation, Reese saw Griffin’s renewed statements and didn’t mince words in firing back. In a pointed tweet, the Chicago Sky forward accused Griffin of fabricating the story purely for attention.
“Lying on this app when everybody know the first and last name of everybody in my circle for clout is nastyyyy work,” Reese tweeted, making it abundantly clear she rejects Griffin’s version of events.
As the situation unfolded, Reese wasn’t alone in pushing back. Her mother also jumped into the discussion, further challenging Griffin’s credibility and offering her own perspective.
“Man, stop with that,” Reese’s mom tweeted in response. “My daughter’s ‘circle’ is so small and tight, so I’d be interested to know who called you. Whoever you say ‘called’ you is not in her circle to speak on her feelings towards a media/fandom made-up beef. Just stay on that side because the doors are closed over here.”
Despite Griffin’s assertion that he’s simply commenting on the competitive nature of sports, the exchange has only deepened the rift between him and Reese’s camp. Reese and Clark have often been compared as faces of a new era in women’s basketball, a narrative that has at times overshadowed their individual accomplishments and fueled unnecessary controversy.
Importantly, there’s no concrete evidence available publicly to prove or disprove Griffin’s claim about Reese’s feelings toward Clark, and it remains a matter of personal accounts versus public denial.
Still, if recent days are any indication, Griffin’s comments have done little except spark more drama and frustration among Reese’s supporters and family. Many fans and commentators are suggesting Griffin would do better to refrain from mentioning Reese altogether on social media to avoid pouring more fuel on an already sensitive situation.
For now, what remains is an ongoing and very public disagreement, reminding everyone just how quickly sports rivalries — and the narratives that grow around them — can escalate far beyond the game itself.
